8 Bremen Companies involved in Mass Spectrometry
Success storiesHigh-tech measuring instruments from Bremen

Mass spectrometers are extremely precise machines – and the manufacturers of these instruments are high-tech companies. Bremen is known as a hotspot in this industry and has a global reputation in this field.
What types of molecules and atoms are present in a sample, and how many of them are there? Mass spectrometers provide the answers to questions like these. They measure the mass of molecules and atoms and present the data as a list. These devices are used in many different sectors of industry and research – in chemistry, medicine, biology, particle physics and even archaeology. Nowadays, they are an indispensable tool in research and development. They are extremely sensitive instruments, capable, for example, of detecting traces of a sugar cube that has been dissolved in a huge lake, such as Lake Constance in Germany, from a single sample of water.
Developing and manufacturing these devices requires decades of experience, well-qualified technical staff and a location that positively encourages innovation. And all that can be found in the Hanseatic City of Bremen.
As a consequence, Bremen has grown to become a hotspot for mass spectrometry in the past few decades.
8 Bremen Companies involved in Mass Spectrometry
-
Thermo Fisher Scientific (Bremen) GmbH
Two companies are at the heart of this hotspot – the first is Thermo Fisher Scientific, a major company from the USA that is active in the medical/medtech sector. Its Bremen site has a workforce of around 500 staff, making it one of the group's largest employers in Germany. This company's history goes back to 1947, when the newly established Bremen company Atlas MAT (measurement and analysis technology) developed one of the very first mass spectrometer prototypes. In later years, the company was bought out by companies from the USA which, through a process of mergers, take-overs and name changes, evolved to become Thermo Fisher Scientific, as the company is known today. -
Bruker Daltonics GmbH & Co. KG
Also a large American corporation, Bruker Daltonics GmbH & Co. KG is one of the world's leading manufacturers of mass spectrometers. More than 800 people currently work at its premises in Bremen. The company is also expanding to keep pace with increasing global demand and, as a result, opened a second production facility in Bremen in 2024. - InProcess Instruments Gesellschaft für Prozeßanalytik mbH
InProcess specialises in online gas analysis systems and manufactures bespoke systems for a wide range of different sectors. In addition to the spectrometer itself, InProcess supplies its clients are with additional integrated components which enable the entire system to perform sample analyses in laboratories. For example, some of InProcess's spectrometry systems are able to heat gases up to 2,000 degrees Celsius and then analyse them. Other instruments are able to pulverise glass samples and then measure if unwanted gases are present in the powder, which would indicate an error in the manufacturing process. The company was founded in 1997 and today has a workforce of 30. - VACUTEC Hochvakuum- & Präzisionstechnik GmbH
Mass spectrometers simply wouldn't be possible without high vacuum technology, because even the very slightest trace of impurities can distort the measurement results. And VACUTEC ensures that a vacuum is present. This Bremen-based company works in the fields of high vacuum and precision technology, manufacturing parts, assemblies and complete devices in which, among other things, an ultra-clean vacuum can be created. This is vital for many scientific investigations, especially when it is imperative that the materials being studied are not affected by any external influences. To achieve this, the company applies exacting requirements when it comes to cleanliness and precision, even during the manufacturing process itself. - MassTech Analysegeräte Technik GmbH
This Bremen company is also a supplier of vacuum technology systems, offering pumps and operating equipment from a range of manufacturers. The company also repairs devices and has its own small-scale production facility for electro-mechanical parts that are used in the field of high vacuum technology. - MasCom Technologies GmbH
This company started life in 1991, offering servicing and repair services for mass spectrometers. Over the years, it has steadily increased its areas of expertise and the range of services it provides. Today, it has an online shop offering a broad range of replacement parts and refurbished devices from the sector. MasCom Technologies GmbH also makes its own devices such as secondary electron multipliers (SEMs). This instrument is used to amplify very weak streams of electrons so that they can be detected by measuring devices. This procedure is used in image analysis. - mzio GmbH
A newcomer and start-up in the field is mzio. Unlike many other companies listed here, this firm is not involved in the construction and equipping of mass spectrometers. Instead, its focus is exclusively on software. It aims to give researchers new tools that will make it easier to evaluate the streams of data provided by the mass spectrometers. - spectromat Massenspektrometer GmbH
This company provides wrap-around services for users in the mass spectrometry industry. This is the commitment made by this Bremen-based company. In addition to offering servicing, maintenance and conversion services, and training courses, for existing systems, this company also develops hardware and software for every aspect of the technology, to ensure seamless system integration.
